Melanie Young is a visual artist based in Cornwall in the UK. Using a process of building thin layers, she creates a patterned and decorative surface using paint and gold leaf. These are then scratched back revealing the process behind the painting.
Melanie’s paintings are figurative and explore themes of the familial and domestic, which are contrasted with the bold, vibrant patterns in her work. In these narrative scenes she plays with scale and perspective, flattening the images and distorting the forms in the painting. Sometimes figures are partially hidden and obscured, which are unexpected and emotive.
